Individual Therapy

I specialise in helping people who feel lost amidst major life transitions or changes, and those who are dealing with traumatic life events.

I believe that therapy should be a collaborative approach between the therapist and the client. The work we do will be centred around your needs, your history, and you as a person. I believe that the relationship with your therapist is a key part, and think it is important for you to feel respected, understood and valued by your therapist. You will need to be ready to do the work, but you do not need to do it alone. I will bring my expertise and myself as a human being to the process to support and guide you.

I want to help you find yourself and the path forward when you feel lost amidst it all. Together we will find the right approach for you, using evidence based interventions with practical and human guidance.

I primarily work with EMDR, ACT, CFT, and CBT approaches depending on your needs.

What happens when I book a therapy appointment?

Assessment

During our first call we will complete a thorough assessment. I want to hear your story, what has brought you to this point and what you hope to gain from our work together. Sometimes this can be finished in one appointment, however we might agree to use more time for more complicated experiences. If you give me permission I might also ask to get in touch with your medical team as needed.

We will also make an agreement on how we will work together and discuss your questions.

Therapy sessions

Once we have agreed on what we want to achieve and whether this is possible, we will work out a therapy plan together. I primarily use evidence based approaches such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). We will always tailor the approach to your needs, making sure that what we are doing works for you at this point in time. We can blend interventions when required e.g. we might use some EMDR to support a trauma memory, and follow this up with some ACT work to support you to move forward in life.

How we meet

I primarily work online via a secure video platform, which I believe allows me and my clients to be the most flexible around other commitments and health challenges. Online therapy has been proven to be as effective as in person sessions.

We can discuss the option of in person sessions or walking therapy sessions if we live locally to one another and this feels appropriate. I am based in the North East of Scotland. Add this into your email if this would be your preference.

Ending therapy

All therapeutic work has to come to an end, usually when the work we set out to do has been completed. This doesn’t always mean that you have overcome all of the challenges you are facing, but that you now have the tools and strategies to continue with this on your own.

We will work together to make sure that we have a plan in place for how and when we will end therapy, and resources you may wish to access after this point. I also operate an open door policy - if we have worked together in the past and you feel you need a top up session or further support, just get in touch to discuss this.

I believe that endings are important for both of us. If for some reason during the course of our therapy you don’t feel that you wish to continue, I would appreciate you getting in touch to let me know with however much information you are willing to share about your decision. If it is simply not the right time, we can also agree a pause.

If for some unexpected reason I am unable to continue my clinical work before our agreed time, I have plans in place as to how you will be notified of this and further support for you as needed.

If the support isn’t right for you

If you or I feel that the work we are doing is not the right fit for you, we will make a plan together as to where you might get better support for your needs. That might be via your local NHS services, charities or other third sector organisations. I appreciate your honest feedback about how you feel in our work together so that we can make sure you are finding the work useful.

Because I work privately, I am not the right clinician to support you if you are experiencing an acute mental health crisis such as psychosis symptoms or if you are at a very high risk of harm. This is because in those circumstances you may need the support of multiple clinicians such as nurses and doctors, medication, and likely 24/7 support which I cannot provide. I will not work with you if you are in this position when we first meet. If you become more unwell during our work together I will work with you and your GP to make sure you have access to the right support as soon as possible.

My main aim is to make sure you are safe and getting the right support.

How much does a session cost?

Individual Therapy Sessions:

£120 per 50 minutes of therapy.

If we are working with EMDR and have agreed that longer sessions would be beneficial, the fee is £180 per 80 minute appointment.

Couples Therapy Sessions:

£140 per 50 minutes of couples therapy.

If we need longer appointments for a couples session we can discuss this in a session separately.
