What happens during a session?
3
In our first therapy session we will complete an assessment together. I will ask you questions about your life, the challenges you are currently experiencing, and your hopes for how you would like therapy to support you. We may do this in one or a few sessions depending on what feels best. After this we will come up with a plan for support together and agree on a number of sessions to complete this in before we review the plan. During each subsequent session we will work through this approach.
For example, if we agreed to work with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy) we will follow the standard approach for this across sessions until we have completed processing your trauma. In some sessions we may spend more time using formal psychological interventions (such as Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy or trauma therapies). In other sessions we might spend more time focusing on a current issue or a change e.g. if your health has changed or you received a new diagnosis.
In every session you can expect that I will be open and willing to be led by you whilst keeping us on track for our goals, that I will be empathetic and kind when guiding you through these challenges whilst also pushing you to keep moving towards your goals, and that we will work together rather than me telling you what to do.
